Lemon verbena is an aromatic plant known for its lemon-scented leaves. Also called Aloysia citrodora or Lippia citriodora, it contains naturally occurring plant compounds, including verbascoside. Extracts of its leaves have been scientifically investigated for their relationship with relaxation, perceived stress and sleep quality.

improved sleep quality
In a 90-day placebo-controlled study, adults taking lemon verbena extract reported improved sleep quality. Measurements also recorded improvements in the time taken to fall asleep and night-time awakenings.¹

reduced perceived stress
Participants taking lemon verbena extract in the eight-week study reported reduced perceived stress. Researchers also recorded a decrease in cortisol levels during supplementation.²
more restful nights
In a separate eight-week study, participants taking the extract reported feeling better rested. Wearable tracking recorded increased deep sleep compared with the start of the study and a higher proportion of REM sleep compared with placebo.²
night-time melatonin
The 90-day study recorded higher night-time melatonin levels in the lemon verbena group compared with placebo. Melatonin is involved in the body’s sleep–wake cycle.¹

Our approach to lemon verbena:
A botanical ingredient selected for NoviRest, with published research exploring the connection between calmer days and more restful nights.
Research into lemon verbena brings together participants’ experiences and measurements of sleep and stress.
Studies have used sleep-quality questionnaires, wearable sleep tracking and measurements of cortisol and night-time melatonin. This allows researchers to explore both how participants feel and changes recorded during the study.
The findings below come from published studies of lemon verbena extract.
